Studies we do for agencies

Tell us the question and the watershed. We build the model from national data, calibrate it to USGS streamflow, develop the science the question needs, and deliver the model, the results and a written report.

A watershed model for a TMDL or a Section 319 plan

The question it answers

How much flow, sediment and nutrient each sub-basin delivers, and how much each practice or land change would cut it.

We deliver

The SWAT+ model of your watershed, calibrated to its USGS gauge; sediment and nutrient loads for each sub-basin; the reduction scenarios your plan asks for; a written report; the model files. Loads are fitted to water-quality samples where you or a public record hold them; elsewhere they use the model’s standard parameters, and the report says which.

Example

Bixler Run (USGS 01567500) and Lycoming Creek (01550000), Pennsylvania: calibrated SWAT+ models scored on years the calibration never saw, daily NSE 0.75 and KGE 0.79 at Bixler Run and NSE 0.63 at Lycoming Creek.

Streamflow where there is no gauge

The question it answers

How much water flows, day by day and in low-flow and high-flow years, at a stream, intake or outfall that has no gauge.

We deliver

A SWAT+ model calibrated to the nearest USGS gauge, daily flow at every channel in the watershed, the flow statistics you name at your sites, a written report on how far the calibration carries, and the model files.

Example

Lookout Creek, Oregon (USGS 14161500): 63.7 km², 1,316 HRUs and 790 channels, each channel with its own simulated flow.

Groundwater and streams together

In Michigan Lower Peninsula, Indiana, Minnesota, Ohio, Wisconsin.

The question it answers

How much rain recharges the aquifer, how that compares with pumping, and where groundwater levels and the groundwater flow to streams settle under a dry year’s recharge.

We deliver

The SWAT+ watershed model calibrated to its gauge, a steady-state MODFLOW 6 groundwater model beside it built from the state’s well records, recharge and pumping balances, the scenarios you ask for, a written report and the model files. A run that follows streams and wells through a dry year day by day is further work, quoted on its own.

Example

Our model of the Pentwater River watershed.

PFAS: how fast it reaches groundwater at a site

The question it answers

How long PFOS takes to pass through the soil to the water table at a site, and how much arrives.

We deliver

Transport through the unsaturated zone for your site’s soil and recharge, with sorption to soil and to the air-water interface, as in our Journal of Contaminant Hydrology paper; arrival times and mass at the water table; a written report. The study runs on your site’s data.

Example

“Vadose-zone control of PFOS delivery to groundwater: explicit unsaturated-zone transport with solid-phase and air-water interfacial sorption”, Journal of Contaminant Hydrology.

Studies also answer questions on sediment, nutrients, reservoirs, wetlands, water temperature, crops, PFAS, salt and bacteria. See the research areas

After the study, we can keep your models and update them when the data change. That upkeep is a line in the proposal, with its own price.
