The Lower Chesapeake on NHDPlus HR: about twice the mapped flow paths

The Lower Chesapeake (HUC4 0208) lies in Delaware, Maryland, Virginia and West Virginia. NHDPlus Version 2 (release 2.1) maps flow paths at 1:100,000 and NHDPlus HR mostly at 1:24,000 or finer. Over the 18 eight-digit basins (HUC8) both datasets carry, HR maps 81,765 km of network flow paths against 39,315 km in NHDPlus Version 2, about 2.08 times the length (02080101, HR only, is left out). SWATGenX builds its SWAT+ models on NHDPlus HR; one of them sits here: Kerrs Creek near Lexington, Virginia (USGS 02022500).

Transcript

This is the Lower Chesapeake, in Delaware, Maryland, Virginia and West Virginia. Start in one of its eight-digit basins, the Maury. NHDPlus Version 2 maps its flow paths at one to one hundred thousand. NHDPlus HR maps them mostly at one to twenty-four thousand or finer. Across the 18 eight-digit basins both datasets carry, HR maps about twice as many kilometers of flow paths: 81,765 against 39,315. We build on HR, and one of our models sits here: Kerrs Creek near Lexington. The Lower Chesapeake, on the network your model is built on.
